The space of Mohkinstsis

2019

Beadwork and embroidery on Canvas

A constellation can be destiny, inevitability, and a circumstance. In the grand scale of space, time, and proximity, our city-seated in the traditional territory of the Blackfoot peoples, reaches out towards the hills and blankets the land in buildings and electric light. Inspired by the mosaic by Helena Hadala, This work enlarges and presents a portrait of Calgary from far above in the darkness and in reference to the tile-work below. This metropolis forms a shape unique unto itself and tiny in the scope of the earth and whole universe. It was not until after the beginning of the space age that we as a species were able to venture out beyond our planet and look down upon ourselves to see the similarities of a constellation in the sky and our own cities at night.
